About Me

hair care

About a month ago I decided to color my hair and finally lose my balayage virginity. First, let me start off by saying that I have never done anything this drastic to my hair but cut it and put in some terrible DIY highlights with my best friend when I was like 12.balayage, hair color, hair care, hair tips

Also, I should probably mention that my sister and I have always dreamt of being twins so we usually do everything together and we get uncontrollably excited when we wear the same pajamas, for example, or decide on coloring our hair together.

So when she said, “fuck it I’m going to go blonde” I replied, “oh my god. You’re a genius.”

Yes, we’re kind of weird but in a really, really good way. We also dragged my cousin into the whole twin thing too

I spent an entire day pinteresting ideas, imagining myself as a blonde, and reading articles on why I should (or shouldn’t) color my hair. I know I know, once you dye your hair, it will never be the same again and it will never look as healthy as it did before. The pros and cons sort of balanced each other out but I took all of this into account, looked the other way, took a deep breath in and said, “fuck it I don’t care”.

So let me list the pros and cons of dyeing your natural hair:

Pros:

  • You will and feel look amazing (if you go to a good hairdresser)

    • My sister and I went to different hair dresses. Sadly, she paid almost double the price I did because she had to re-color her hair. They had literally bleached her hair. Yes, what the damn hell indeed.
  • It will give you more confidence.

  • You’re young (wild and healthy)

    • With time, your hair will become less healthy, which was also another excuse for me to do it now because I knew I would later come to regret not doing it.

Cons:

  • Your hair will literally never be the same

  • Peroxide and ammonia will damage your hair

  • Expensive to maintain

I tried to not think or read about it too much because I didn’t want to change my mind. And so I dyed my hair and something amazing happened. I fell deeply in love with my hair and it’s flourished into a beautiful obsession. I get excited every time I curl my hair or go to a hairdresser. Also, I have no idea what a crack addiction feels like but when I think about coloring my hair or getting more blonde in it I feel all euphoric inside. It’s fucking fantastic.

Hair Care Tips For Color-Treated Hair

  • Dont wash your hair every day!

    • Dry shampoo should become your new best friend.
    • People think its gross but again, I don’t fucking care. It’s good for your hair and every strand on my head agrees.
    • I can’t stress enough how much damage you do to your hair when you wash it everyday. Also, your color won’t last as long as it should if you’re just washing it away.
    • If your argument is that your hair gets greasy. Try not washing it for a few days (each time a few days more) until your hair gets used to it.
  • Recondition your hair once a week and eat healthier

  • Buy shampoo for color-treated hair

    •  Your hair has taken enough damage and it’s time to let it breathe.
    • SULFATE-FREE.
    • My favorite? I use this Shampoo and Conditioner
    • Also, never stick to only one brand! You need to switch it up from time to time. I also bought this Redken duo
  • Protect your hair during the summer

  • Condition before you wash

    • A few minutes before you jump in the shower, spray some water and lather your hair with conditioner
  • Avoid heat styling tools

    • I love to have the perfect curl but having those freshly fried curls are not a good look. Try some no-heat curls and hairstyles. There are a million on Pinterest.
  • Invest in quality hair products

    • It may be because I’m a total freak with my hair, but you will save some money and won’t need to head to the salon before needed. Your hair will thank you AND it will look as healthy as it did when it was still your natural color.
  • Use a Silver based shampoo once a week for blondes

    • The hairdresser who colored my hair suggested I use this Redken Silver Charge shampoo for men. I bought it on amazon and use it every other week.
