A Little Bit About The Place

Peru, known for its diverse culture, its awarding-winning cuisine, colorful textiles, and ancient ruins, lies in Western South America. The biodiversity in Peru is incredible, ranging from the high Andes mountains to the Amazon Rainforest. The country is absolutely fascinating, not to mention, it’s home for one of the seven world wonders, Machu Picchu!

If you’re looking for adventure, to immerse into a new culture, or enjoy the food, the views, and the architecture, make sure you add Peru to your list!

Things to Know Before You Travel

Language. Spanish

Heads up. The voltage in Peru is 220V and they mostly use C-type outlets. I’d recommend bringing a converter just in case.

Getting Around. Always use a cab service (Uber, Easy Taxi, Cabify). It’s common for street cabs to take advantage of foreigners and either mug them or overcharge them. Do not take street cabs! P.S. I’ve been mugged in one before, and it’s the worst.

Best Time to Travel

  • Dry Season: May – September. Best for Cusco, Machu Picchu,
  • Summer: December – March. Best for the coast, beaches, sand dunes, the North
  • Shoulder/wet Season: April and October. Best for the Jungle, when the temperatures aren’t too high and avoiding heavy rains.
  • Winter: April-November. Best for Huaraz (beautiful lakes) and Ica (Huacachina and Vineyards)

Health. Make sure you keep your meals light the first day or two so you avoid getting sick.

Altitude. If you’re visiting Machu Picchu, stop by any pharmacy and buy Sorojchi Pills. They’ll relieve + prevent any altitude sickness.

Safety. Pickpocketing is VERY common. Keep everything in your front pockets or a secure purse/backpack. Always be alert and never leave your things unattended. keep your belongings close where you can see them.

Tours

  • Lima. Day tours are pretty easy to find. The Hop on Hop off is a great Budget-Friendly way to explore the whole city.
  • Cusco. Tour guides are everywhere! You’ll find most taxi drivers are tour guides too. You can ask your concierge or you can find tons of budget-friendly excursions that will take you to see all the ruins in Cusco + the Sacred Valley.
  • Jungle. You can stay in hostels, budget-friendly hotels, or luxury hotels. To get the absolute most out of this trip and see the most beautiful parts are the jungle, I’d book at Inkaterra. Take a look at my travel guide here.

Suggested daily budget – 35-50+ USD / 80-165+ PEN (Note: This is only a suggested budget. ) You’ll find Peru to be very affordable. This will cover transportation and meals. Most restaurants, cafes, and bars are pretty affordable. However, if you’re planning a high-end stay, eating at more luxurious places, and purchasing city tours, daily costs will rise.

Recommendations + Budget-Friendly Tips

Miraflores, San Isidro, or Barranco are the nicest areas to stay in Lima. AirBnBs are actually pretty affordable, FYI! Book flights + rooms + and hikes in advance. Some tours you need reservation weeks in advance!”]
[mkdf_numbered_list number=”2″ number_color=”#f2756a” title=”Food” text=”Food. Peru has won a ton of culinary awards. The food is freaking delicious! My suggestion: Pick your top 10 Restaurants you’re dying to try. Trust me, you will be overwhelmed with all the places you need to visit! Or book a food tour on AirBnB. Isolina, Osaka, and Amaz are my top 3!”]
[mkdf_numbered_list number=”3″ number_color=”#f2756a” title=”Eat Light” text=”More spice, more flavor. I don’t want to scare you, but, you might get sick while you’re in Peru. The food is different. Take it easy the first few days so your body gets used to it. Stick to soups, chicken, and non-greasy foods. I know it might be hard, but you’ll thank me later.”]
